Copyright Guide: Limited licenses

Limited licenses

Software license agreements can generally be divided into two groups: limited licenses and open source licenses. As the names indicate, the difference between the license agreements is that limited licenses provide only limited rights of use, while with open source licenses the user has more extensive rights. This division is a bit misleading as open source licenses, too, may contain many different restrictions on use.

Restrictions on End Users

Licenses may contain an unlimited number of different restrictions on use by end users. In practice, it largely depends on the program's intended purpose of use and sales and marketing strategy what restrictions are employed. Naturally, consumer protection and competition legislation must be observed when selecting the appropriate restrictions.
