Business information skills training

The business and economics information skills training programme is designed to meet the distinct needs of students, teachers, researchers and research groups. An IR kick-off session familiarizes you with information retrieval as well as the electronic resources and scientific journal services available at the Learning Centre. The contents and duration of the session may be tailored to your specific needs.

IR kick-off sessions are primarily designed for Aalto University School of Business students, seminar groups and postgraduate students.

Aalto University School of Business' walruses (freshmen) are welcome to visit the library in tutored groups.

 

IR kick-off sessions

An IR kick-off session (duration ca. 1 hour) aims at equipping the attendee with IR skills needed in his or her thesis work. IR kick-off session is suitable for example for master's thesis students, postgraduate students and researchers.

The IR kick-off session provides the attendee with a working knowledge of:

  • Aalto-Primo search service: checking availability of books and journals, and renewing loans
  • E-books, e.g. Ebook Central
  • E-journals, e.g. Ebsco
  • IR: search planning, search strategies, interpretation of results
  • off-campus access to electronic resources for working e.g. at home

Selected additional resources related to the thesis’ theme or student’s wishes may also be included in the IR kick-off session, e.g. Web of Knowledge (ISI), Scopus, ProQuest, Marketline etc.  

IR kick-off sessions are mainly arranged on weekdays between Monday and Friday from 9 to 12 a.m. in Harald Herlin Learning Centre. Also other times and locations may be scheduled within the realms of possibility. Remote sessions are also possible with Microsoft Teams or Zoom.

IR kick-off session is an information retrieval (IR) and resources use support session suitable for e.g. Aalto University School of Business Thesis tutorial groups. The session introduces your group to the printed and electronic materials available at our Learning Centre.

All IR kick-off sessions are customized to meet the specific needs of each individual group. The following topics may be discussed during an IR kick-off session:

  • Aalto-Primo search service: checking availability of books and journals, and renewing loans
  • E-books, e.g. Ebook Central
  • E-journals, e.g. Ebsco
  • IR: search planning, search strategies, interpretation of results
  • off-campus access to electronic resources for working e.g. at home

The teacher will be in charge of booking the room or lecture hall you wish to use.  Depending on the group’s interests, the IR kick-off session takes approximately one hour. Remote sessions are also possible with Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
