Dictionaries either explain or translate terminology. In addition to general dictionaries there are specialist dictionaries and terminologies for different subjects.

Reference works such as different kinds of encyclopedias are meant for accessing information quickly and in a compact format. They are useful for finding general information about a topic, related terminology or for checking out specific facts. Reference works can be generic or speciliased in specific subjects.
